Throughout the 1920’s, women in the Manzanita area met in homes to visit and sew, valued events to offset the limitations of fall-spring coastal weather. When the residents decided to build a community building, this group was instrumental in raising funds and enthusiasm to build the original structure. The Pine Grove Community House was dedicated in 1931, and the women established an official club, Stitch and Chatter, to promote the Pine Grove as a place for the community to meet and socialize through a variety of activities.

The women’s club has continued since its official establishment in 1933, albeit modifying our name as membership and mission transitioned over time. Initially, our focus was to plan and coordinate activities, maintain the kitchen and raise money for the community center. As traditional social roles expanded, the clubs’ mission evolved to support projects for the broader coastal community. Membership has grown, now drawing women throughout north Tillamook County. Meetings continue to provide enjoyable opportunities offset the limitations of fall-spring coastal weather while working together to benefit the local community.

It is notable that the historic partnership with the Pine Grove Community House has been sustained over time. Although the women’s association and community house became two distinct organizations, both with formalized bylaws, memberships, governing boards, and missions, the unique relationship endured.

Today, the North Tillamook County Women’s Association has members from diverse coastal locations. We are registered as a 503c(3) nonprofit corporation. Our mission has remained local: Supporting the lives of individuals and families in North Tillamook County.
